Inspirational visit to V&A yesterday. Saw original 1818 Willow Pattern plate with the name 'Thomasine Willey' made by Spode. Grey wet and windy ... Artist, Susan Hillier ill so not speaking at the dlwp tonight.
This blog is about a series of large drawings that map the transcription and deconstruction of the images, patterns and motifs that make up a Willow Pattern plate. In exploring familiar, traditional and iconic images, like the 18th century Willow Pattern, we are often unaware of the details that make up the whole. A deconstruction of such an recognisable image often makes us reappraise its place and value in society. I am drawing these patterns and motifs one by one, day by day onto a large sheet of Fabriano paper attached to the studio wall. The end result will be a series of large drawings that will record a thought and decision-making process about how to undo such a familiar image.
Phase 1 Feb-March 2007 - Experimental drawing phase. Phase 2 June - Nov 2007 - Categorisation of each whole motif. Phase 3 Jan - March. 2008 - Deconstruction of whole images.
